How to Minimize DSL Dropouts

DSL connections involve a high-speed connection over standard phone lines to the Internet. In the course of connecting over these lines to the Internet, it is very likely that the DSL modem on your end will not receive a signal from the network, resulting in what is known as a DSL dropout, which keeps you from getting Internet access. Fortunately, there are steps that you can take in order to minimize any DSL issues.

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect all of the DSL connections, such as the connection to the modem and phone line. Make sure all of the plugs are securely connected to their receptors, and make sure that there are no cracks or other damages in the wires.

    • 2

Attach DSL filters to every device that connects to a telephone line, such as phones or fax machines. These filters keep the additional signal made by these devices from interrupting the DSL connection.

    • 3

Restart your DSL modem periodically by turning it off, waiting 10 seconds and turning it back on.

    • 4

Regulate your Internet connection. When downloading a big file, don't use any other programs that rely on an active Internet connection.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sometimes DSL may be lost due to a network outage. Check with your ISP's technical support to see if this is the case.
