How to Find the Latitude and Longitude of a Street Address

If you know the latitude and longitude of a location, which is its angular distance from the center of the Earth, you can find out exactly where it is on the planet. While there are plenty of websites that offer maps and driving directions, you can’t always find the latitude and longitude of an address using these services. Microsoft’s TerraServer-USA website offers maps and photographs of locations in the U.S. through a partnership with the U.S. Geological Survey, and you can also easily find the coordinates for an address on the site.

Instructions

    • 1

Type terraserver-USA.com into your browser’s address bar.

    • 2

Enter the street address, city and state into the fields on the left side of the page.

    • 3

      Click “Go.”

    • 4

Click one of the links under “Available Image,” such as “aerial photo” or “topo map.”

    • 5

Note the latitude and longitude on the left side of the page.

Tips & Warnings

  • To find the latitude and longitude of an address outside of the U.S., try the GPS Visualizer website, at gpsvisualizer.com. Click “Geocode an address” at the top of the page.

  • To double-check the latitude and longitude of an address, try mapquest.com. Click the down arrow next to “International” and select “Map by Latitude and Longitude.” Enter the coordinates to get a map of the location.
