How to Remove a Decal From a Bike Safely

Removing decal stickers from your bike is more difficult than removing regular stickers, since decals are thinner and stickier. Another challenge is removing the decals without scratching the bike's paint. If you want to repaint your bike or add new stickers, you will need to take off every trace of the old decal or else have an uneven surface. You will also need to buy some extra supplies at the store before you embark on decal removal.

Things You'll Need

  • Blow dryer
  • Plastic scraper
  • Degreaser spray
  • Paper towels
  • Plug in your blow dryer and turn it to the highest setting, if possible. Most blow dryers have a maximum temperature of 140 degrees, if there is no setting.

  • Hold the blow dryer about two inches away from the bike's decal to make the glue hot. Move the blow dryer around in small circles starting near the edge of the decal and working your way down, making the decal evenly hot. Five minutes of direct, hot air on the decal is usually enough to melt the glue underneath.

  • Gently attempt to lift one corner of the decal with a plastic scraper, which will not damage the bike's paint like a metal scraper. Hold the dryer on the area longer if you cannot lift up the edge.

  • Soak the decal in a solution called "Goo Gone" if you can't peel off the decal. Let it sink in for 10 minutes and then repeat the process of blow drying and scraping.

  • Peel the decal slowly along using your hands or the scraper. Keep the blow dryer on the area you are trying to lift up, but watch your fingers, or you might get burned by the hot air.

  • Spray some bug removal spray or "de-greaser" type of spray onto a paper towel and wipe off any remaining glue from your bicycle.
