How to Calculate Air National Guard Retirement Pay
The United States military is split into two parts when determining retired pay. One part is the active-duty component. These military members serve full-time and calculate their retired pay based on time served. The second part is the reserve component. These military members train on weekends and at summer camps and serve part-time. The amount an Air National Guard (ANG) member receives in retirement is based on a points system.

1
Receive notice one year prior to eligibility of retirement. This notice is sent by a letter from the personnel office of the Air Force. Most members must have 20 qualifying years of service and be 60 years of age to retire. Some members are eligible to retire prior to age 60. Members who were mobilized after January 28, 2008, can reduce their retirement age by three months for every 90 days they are mobilized.
-
2
Review the calculated total years of service using a point system. Members receive points for each year assigned to an ANG component, each day of service, each training activity, serving on a funeral detail or completing correspondence courses.

3
Determine what formula to use when calculating retirement pay. Air National Guard members must use different formulas for retirement based on whether they entered the service before or after Sept. 8, 1980.
-
4
Compute the retirement pay for members entering the service on or prior to September 8, 1980. Each ANG member receives retirement pay based on a formula of 2.5 percent of regular pay at time of retirement times the total number of years of service derived from points. If a member had 20 years of service at retirement based on points, he would receive 2.5 percent x 20 for a total of 50 percent retirement.

5
Compute a retirement for members entering the service later than Sept. 8, 1980. These members retired pay would be 2.5 percent of the average of the 36 highest-paid months times the total number of years served the ride from points. For example, if the service member was earning an average of $1,800 a month over the highest paid 36 months prior to retirement, their retired pay would be $900 a month.
