How to Get Middle School Kids Organized

Middle school adds challenges for most students. They suddenly have more responsibility and ownership over their school schedule. They don't have a teacher constantly leading them down the hall like they did in elementary school. Combined with more homework and higher expectations, many middle school students become overwhelmed. Helping your middle school student get organized increases her chances of a successful school year.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase an organizer or planner for your middle school student that includes a calendar. Teach her how to use the planner to record all of her assignments and appointments. Review the organizer with her on a regular basis to make sure she is using it.

    • 2

Create a list together of all of the child's responsibilities. This might include homework, chores at home, organizations and extracurricular activities.

    • 3

Help her create a customized daily schedule that starts from the time she wakes up until she goes to bed. This gives structure to her day and ensures she has time for all of the important tasks. The list of responsibilities helps form the schedule.

    • 4

Create a study area in the child's room or in a common area of the home. Include a work space and organizers such as plastic trays for papers. Add all of the needed supplies so your middle school student can sit down and get right to work.

    • 5

Label all folders and notebooks for specific subjects and purposes. If the child uses a binder, include label tabs so she can easily locate the section she needs. Work with the middle school student so she understands the labeling and organization.

    • 6

Set aside a specific time for homework each night. Define the rules for the homework time such as no TV or cell phones.

    • 7

Teach her to organize her backpack before she goes to bed. This ensures it is ready in the morning without scrambling to gather everything she needs.

    • 8

Keep the child's organizational skills on track by checking in at least once a week. Help her get back on track if her organization is slipping.
