How to Use the iPhone for Beginners

Apple's iPhone revolutionized the mobile-phone industry when it was released in 2007. The iPhone combines the features of a portable music player, camera, laptop computer and cell phone into one small user-friendly package.

However, the iPhone's numerous features and functions can be overwhelming for lifelong users of "standard" cell phones, particularly if they aren't tech-savvy. Learn the basics of getting started with your new iPhone. After a bit of practice, using the iPhone will become second nature.

Instructions

  1. Making Calls

    • 1

Tap the "Wake" button on top of your iPhone (right side). Tap and drag the slider that appears on your touchscreen. This will bring you to the iPhone main menu.

    • 2

Press the "Phone" button on your main menu (lower-left corner). This brings you to your phone interface. Drag down the slider to browse through your contacts. To select a contact to call, tap the contact's name, and then tap the telephone number associated with the contact.

    • 3

Make a call to a number that's not in your contacts list by tapping the "Keypad" symbol along the bottom of the "Phone" menu. When the touch-screen keypad pops up, tap the telephone number and hit "Call."

    Text Messages

    • 4

Tap the green "SMS" icon from your iPhone home screen.

    • 5

Tap the "Pad" icon (upper-right part of screen) to send a new text message.

    • 6

Tap the green plus sign (+) to compose a new message to one of your contacts, or press the "Keypad" button to manually type the telephone number you want to send a message to.

    • 7

Type your message using the pop-up touch screen keyboard, and then click "Send" to send your text message.

    Browsing the Internet

    • 8

Tap the Safari icon from your iPhone main menu (Blue compass icon).

    • 9

Tap the address bar on top of the browser window, and then enter the Web URL using the touch-screen keyboard. Click "Go" to navigate to the Web page.

    • 10

Drag your finger along the touch screen to navigate through a Web page. To visit a link within a Web page, tap the appropriate link and wait for it to load.

    • 11

Zoom in or out on a Web page by "pinching" your iPhone's touch screen. Pinch "in" to zoom in; pinch "out" to zoom out.

Tips & Warnings

  • To add contacts to your iPhone, tap the "Phone" symbol, and then tap "Contacts." Tap the plus icon (+) and enter the contact's information.

  • To exit an application (Internet, Phone, Messaging), press the square button beneath your touch screen. This returns you to your home screen.
