How to Repair a Roof From Fallen Tree Damage

The force and weight of tree limbs falling onto your roof due to a storm, high winds or heavy snow can cause shingles to crack, break or come off completely. You need to replace missing or damaged shingles as soon as possible to avoid costly repairs such as water damage. You can make simple repairs yourself instead of hiring a contractor. Instructions

      Remove all the damaged shingles by lifting the edges carefully and pulling out the nails. Use a crowbar or claw hammer to remove those nails as well as the nails from the shingles above the damaged ones.

      Prepare the new shingles by rounding their corners using a utility knife. This will make sliding the new shingles into place easier.

      Slide a shingle into position underneath the existing row. Align the bottom edge of the shingle with the shingles on both sides.

      Lift each corner of the shingles that overlap the replacement shingle and nail the top of the new shingles in place using 6D galvanized roofing nails. Use one nail for each corner of the shingle.

      Place a dab of roof cement on each nail head. Cover the entire head and smooth with a putty knife. Repeat the process until you have secured all shingles.
