How to Set Patio Stones

Things You'll Need
- Square shovel
- 4-foot level
- Bedding sand
- Mortar mix
- Electric drill with mixing paddle
- 5-gallon bucket
- Brick trowel
- Angle grinder with masonry blade
- Grout mix
- Grout bag
- Large sponge

Excavate soil (3 inches plus the thickness of the stone) from the area to be covered using the square shovel. Use the 4-foot level to ensure an even surface.

Set an even layer of bedding sand about 2½ inches thick over the newly excavated soil, using the 4-foot level to ensure an even surface. Soak with water to settle the sand.

Mix the mortar using the electric drill with mixing paddle in the 5-gallon bucket, following mixing instructions on mortar packaging.

Apply a 1-inch-thick layer of mortar (using the brick trowel) to a corner of the patio.

Set a stone over the mortar and along the edge of the patio (in the corner). Set the 4-foot level on the stone to ensure an even surface.

Work your way throughout the rest of the patio, repeating Steps 4 and 5. Trim stones to fit using the angle grinder with masonry blade, as necessary.

Allow the mortar to cure before preparing the grout; refer to mortar package for curing times.

Prepare the grout in the 5-gallon bucket using the electric drill with mixing paddle as directed on the grout package.

Fill the grout bag about three-quarters full (with grout) and twist the top opening closed.

Apply the grout to the stone joints, pinching the bottom opening of the bag and twisting the top to regulate grout flow.

Wipe excess grout from stone surfaces using a large wet sponge, rinsing the sponge constantly in clean water.
