Magic Jack

Magic Jack is a great way to save money on home phone bills. Unlike a cell phone, Magic Jack connects via a computer. For $20 a year, the unlimited call feature can't be beat (unless you find a free service).

Because Magic Jack connects to a computer, callers have the option of using computer's microphone along with speakers for a more public conversation or, using a computer headset to keep the conversation private between the caller and the recipient. Headsets come in handy if you work in an environment where using the speaker option on a telephone is frowned upon.

There may be occasions where you may want to switch from a private to a shared conversation, so learning how to switch it from headset to speakers and back is important.

Instructions

    • 1

Activate the magic check service. Insert the dongle into a USB port and make sure that the magic jack interface initiates.

    • 2

Connect your headset or microphone. The beauty of using magic act is that you can keep your conversation private by using a headset which means only you will hear the conversation. You can also use the speakers and microphone to enable several people to participate in the conversation. This works well in a business situation where it is a fun conference call.

    • 3

Access the magic jack software and click the Menu icon at the top of the screen. Select "Switch to headset". To change it back to telephone, click "Switch to telephone."

    • 4

Test out the new configuration. Place a call to a friend or, if you don't want to disturb anyone, call your own cell phone to see if it works.

    • 5

Modify the volume to your liking. If it's a little too loud or too soft click the Menu icon and select Volume/Headset control. This will cause the volume window to open so that you can adjust the sound level to your liking. When adjusting the volume on your headset make sure the "Headset/Other" device is selected.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you use Magic Jack as your sole telephone, keep in mind that, switching it to headset will mean that if you walk away from your computer you won't hear the phone ring. Although that may be beneficial if at times, it can also be detrimental if you're using Magic Jack as a business phone line.
