How to Use Your Car Alarm as a Burglar Alarm

Burglar alarm systems can be very expensive, especially if you are living on a limited budget. There are ways to scare off someone who is trying to break in to your home even if you don't have a burglar alarm.

Instructions

    • 1

Park your car either in your driveway or in front of your apartment, house or condo. The closer to your front door, the better.

    • 2

Always take your car keys to bed with you and know where they are so that you can grab them in the dark. Bedside tables are the best spot.

    • 3

If you hear someone trying to break into a door or a window the first thing you should do is call 911. Even if you don't speak into the phone they can track you on a land line phone and help will be on the way.

The next thing you should do (or do this at the same time) is press the panic alarm button on you car key. This will get the horn to start honking and lights to start flashing and generally raise a ruckus. The last thing someone breaking into a residence wants is attention drawn to them. There is a very good chance the culprit will leave the scene and find an easier target.

Tips & Warnings

  • It is a good idea to test your ability to start the panic alarm from your bedroom before you rely on it. Surprisingly, it works from quite a distance.
