How to Add a Computer to a Wireless Network Without Sacrificing Security

To add extra computers to your wireless network without sacrificing security, you should enable password protection on your router. This will require all computers to enter a security password before they can access your network. If a computer user does not know the security password, then they will not be able to access your wireless network. This is especially the case if you are living in an apartment, where other people can easily access your network if it is not protected.

Instructions

    • 1

Click "Start," "All Programs," then "Accessories." Click "Run" and type "cmd.exe" into the empty box. Hit "Enter."

    • 2

Type "ipconfig" into Command Prompt, then hit "Enter." Write down the set of numbers located next to "Default Gateway."

    • 3

Open an internet browser. Enter the list of numbers from "Default Gateway" into your address bar to access your router's configuration page.

    • 4

Enter your router's default admin name and password, then click "OK." Look for a "Security," "Management" or "Administration" tab or link.

    • 5

Search for a "Router Password" or similar field. Enter your desired network password into the field, then save the changes.

    • 6

Power on the computer you want to connect to the wireless network. Install to the computer any software that originally came with the router. You may need to restart the PC for the installation to take effect.

    • 7

Click "Start," then click "Control Panel." Double-click "Network and Sharing Center." Click "Connect to a network," located on the left-hand side of the screen.

    • 8

Select your wireless connection from the list of networks. Click "Connect." Enter your administrative name and password into the appropriate fields to connect to the network.

Tips & Warnings

  • Router configuration varies greatly based on your router's manufacturer. If you are not sure how to change the router password, or if you are having difficulty navigating the configuration page, review your user manual, or contact the manufacturer for more assistance.

  • Check your router's documentation if you are not sure what the default name and password are.

  • If you've already configured your router's admin name and password, then you do not need to make any changes to the router's configuration page. Simply connect the computer to the network.

  • Write down your password and store it in a safe place.
