How to Make an Art Display From a Clothesline

If you're looking for a unique and fun way to hang art, try displaying it from a clothesline. Clotheslines have been used in schools to display children's artwork for ages, but now they've made their way into the home. They have a shabby-chic appeal and are a simple and functional way to display artwork. One of the best things about an art clothesline is that you can change your art around easily and conveniently as often as you like so your room will never get boring.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a wall for your art display clothesline that is painted (or papered, or paneled) attractively. The wall will be the backdrop for the artwork and should be in good shape.

    • 2

Decide where you want your line to start, and where you want it to finish. Also decide if you want a single line across, or several, and at what height. Use a yardstick or tape measure and a pencil to make marks at the starting and ending points for your art clotheslines.

    • 3

Hammer nails into the walls at the points you made pencil marks. Leave them sticking out of the walls about one inch.

    • 4

Tie a thin clothesline to one nail. Stretch it across the wall to the other nail. Decide how low you want your art display to hang. Remember that the art will pull the clothesline farther down. Tie it to the second nail when you are satisfied with the swag of the clothesline.

    • 5

Cut off the excess line. Hang another art line or two, if desired. Hang you artwork, photographs, paper crafts or printed poetry on your line with clothespins.
