How to Manage Fonts on a Mac

In 2007, the Apple implemented a font management system into the Mac operating system. This management system allows a user to view, add, and remove fonts onto the operating system. Once they're added, these fonts will automatically be available for use in all of the word processing software installed on your computer. With this management system, you don't have to add fonts to each separate piece of software you use.

Instructions

Open the "Font Book" utility on your Mac computer. Click "Finder" in your dock and then select "Applications." Double-click "Font Book" to launch the application.

    • 2

View all of your available fonts in the middle pane of Font Book. From this window, you can look for a particular font or determine whether you are missing a font that you would like installed on your operating system.

    • 3

Resolve duplicate fonts using Font Book. Any duplicate fonts will be displayed with a yellow triangle next to it. If you notice any yellow triangles, first select the font with the yellow triangle icon. Then, click the function button in the top left-hand corner of Font Book and select "Resolve Duplicates."

Add any fonts you would like to install onto your operating system. Click the button in the top left-hand corner and select "Add Fonts." Find and select the font from your computer and click "Open."

    • 5

Disable or remove any fonts that you no longer use. This may be a good idea if you do not use any fonts in a foreign language. Click the font and then click the button in the top left-hand corner. Select "Disable Font" or "Remove Font."

Validate any fonts you think may be causing problems. Sometimes fonts aren't displayed correctly or documents simply won't open. If this is the case, click on the font you want to validate and click the button in the top left-hand corner. Select "Validate Font." If there is a problem with the font, you can disable or remove the font.
