How to Treat Cat Mange Without Drugs

Cats are exceptionally resilient animals and rarely get infectious diseases such as mange. But when it does happen, you need to treat the cat mange as fast as you can not only for the comfort of your pet but also because the demands of cats to sleep on your lap or on your favorite pillow would add to your hygiene issues.

Things You'll Need

  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Borax
  • Water
  • Warm towels

Instructions

    • 1

Mix 1 percent hydrogen peroxide solution with water and borax. Use 2 tsp. of borax for every 500 cc of 1 percent hydrogen peroxide. Mix thoroughly to ensure that there is no residue.

    • 2

Bathe the cat with this solution. Either choose a very warm day and bathe the animal outdoors so that the sun will keep it warm or have warm towels ready to wrap around the animal after the bath so that it will not catch a cold.

    • 3

Wrap the cat in hot towels and keep it so for about 30 to 45 minutes, or longer if you can. Ensure that the cat does not lick itself during this time. It is preferable that you carry the cat tightly wrapped in the towel for the 30 to 45 minutes required for the treatment to work on the cat mange.

    • 4

Rinse the cat thoroughly with warm water. Then after about 45 minutes rinse again with a solution that is 2:1 apple cider vinegar and water, and then dry the animal thoroughly. Allow the cat to lick itself because ingestion of the apple cider vinegar helps with the treatment of cat mange. If your cat likes apple cider vinegar, try to give it to the cat twice a day with its food or separately.

    • 5

Apply honey to any irritated spots, suggests the Grandma's Home Remedies website. This reduces irritation and itching, kills the mange mites and fights skin infection.

    • 6

Repeat the treatment for cat mange two to three times a week for a maximum of 2 months. You can apply honey daily or as many times as you find it is required. Keep the cat indoors during treatment to avoid further infection and aggravation of the infection.

Tips & Warnings

  • It is important that the bedding of the cat is cleaned and disinfected thoroughly two to three times a week to kill the mange mites.

  • Clean the whole house, especially the carpeted areas. Unless the whole house (areas where the cat moves about) is thoroughly clean, the mites might keep coming back.

  • Do not allow the cat to scratch the affected areas. If required, use a scratch-preventive collar.

  • Clip the hair around the affected area so that you have easy access to it and application of treatment is easier.

  • Ensure that the cat does not lick itself after the borax-hydrogen peroxide bath; this mixture is highly toxic if ingested.

  • The cat might catch cold if enough care is not taken to keep it warm during the 30 to 45 minutes when the fur is wet.

  • Be careful not to confuse borax with boric acid; the latter is too toxic for use.
