How to Crochet a Long Stem Rose
Decorating your home with roses can be expensive and a little discouraging when they have wilted a week later. Create your own display of blooms, and they will last forever. Crochet a long-stemmed rose to grace a bud vase or crochet several stemmed roses and arrange them in a bouquet vase. This is an easy beginner project for a new crocheter; one long-stemmed rose can be crocheted in less than an hour.

1
Leave a 12-inch yarn tail. Twist a loop in the yarn, and insert the crochet hook. Wrap the yarn around the end of the hook. You are making a yarn over. Pull the yarn back through the loop on the hook. This is a chain stitch, also known as chain one. Chain 42 more stitches.
-
2
Yarn over and insert the hook in the fourth chain from the hook. Yarn over and pull the yarn back through the chain. You will have three loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull the yarn through two loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through the last two loops on the hook. This is a double crochet stitch. Chain two and crochet two double crochet stitches in the same chain stitch as the first double crochet stitch.

3
Skip the next chain stitch. Insert the hook through the next chain and yarn over. Pull the yarn back through the chain and the loop on the hook. This is a slip stitch.
-
4
Skip the next chain. Crochet two double crochet stitches in the next chain; chain two and crochet two more double crochet stitches in the same chain. Skip the next chain and slip stitch in the next. Repeat this step across the row, ending with a slip stitch in the last chain.
-
5
Turn to begin the next row. Slip stitch in the top of the first two double crochet stitches and into the center of the chain space. Chain three, double crochet once, chain two and double crochet twice in the chain space. Slip stitch in the top of the previous row's slip stitch.
-
6
Double crochet twice in the next chain space, and chain two. Double crochet twice in the same space. Slip stitch in the top of the previous row's slip stitch. Repeat this sequence across the row, ending with a slip stitch in the top of the end slip stitch of the previous row. Repeat this row twice more.
-
7
Cut the yarn and knot it. Weave in this yarn tail. Thread the beginning 12-inch tail in a yarn needle.
-
8
Roll the short end with the yarn tail attached. Tightly roll one rotation, and stitch together the beginning row of the rose. Tightly roll another rotation, and continue to stitch. After two rotations, loosely roll the petals. The petals will resemble the open petals of a rose. Knot the yarn; weave in the ends.

9
Trace around a 2-inch wooden star on the back of a scrap piece of green cotton fabric. Cut out the star. Lightly apply craft glue to the wrong side of the star. Set the bottom of the crocheted rose blossom in the center of the star and fold the star points up onto the sides of the rose. This is the calyx of the rose.
-
10
Hold two wire floral stems together. Apply craft glue to one end. Insert the held together wires through the calyx and into the bottom of the rose. Push the wires almost all the way through the blossom. Do not push the wire out the top of the rose.
-
11
Hold green floral tape at an angle and wrap it around the doubled-wire stem. Slightly stretch the tape as you wrap. The stretching will create a tacky texture, allowing the tape to adhere to the wire.
-
12
Place a rose leaf stem against the rose stem, 4 inches below the bottom of the rose. Wrap the tape around the leaf stem to attach. Continue to wrap the tape 1 inch further and place another rose leaf stem against the rose stem. Wrap the leaf stem and continue to the end of the stem. Cut the tape to finish.
