How to Extend Electric Outlets for a Tile Backsplash
Remodeling a room in your home with wood paneling or a tile backsplash can lead to issues when attempting to install the cover plate over a now recessed outlet. Using an electrical box extension ring will provide the necessary length to the outlet box and allow you to affix the electrical cover plate flush to the wall or back splash. The extension ring will simply slide into the existing box and allow the outlet to be flush along with the cover plate. Does this Spark an idea?

Turn the power off to the the outlet(s) that you will be working on. Turn them off at the main circuit breaker panel, typically located in the utility room or garage.

Loosen and remove the top and bottom screws that are holding the outlet in place in the outlet box, using the screwdriver. Pull the outlet out as far as the wiring will allow.

Slide the outlet through the back and out the front of the extension ring. Insert the outlet ring into the existing outlet box, until the edges are flush with the wall.

Line up the holes in the top and bottom of the outlet with the holes in the top and bottom of the extension ring. Insert the screws, and tighten them down until the outlet is flush with the wall.

Place the outlet cover over the outlet, insert the screw in the center hole on the plate and into the matching hole in the outlet, and tighten it with the screwdriver to a snug fit.

Repeat the above steps to install any additional extension rings in the outlets as needed.

Tips & Warnings
Never attempt to work on an electrical outlet that has not been turn off at the main circuit panel.
