How to Make Your Hand Glow in the Dark

You can make your hand glow in the dark without special makeup. A jar of petroleum jelly can be used to give your hand this special effect. Petroleum jelly contains phosphors which absorb a black light's invisible radiation. When a black light is turned on, phosphors in the petroleum jelly emit visible light, making it glow in the dark.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on the black light. Leave one other light on to see what you're doing.

    • 2

Scoop enough petroleum jelly out of the jar to cover both hands. Spread the jelly over both hands. If desired, leave one finger uncovered to avoid getting petroleum jelly on the light switch.

    • 3

Turn off the light. Hold your hands near the black light. Your hands will glow blue.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don't want to get your hands messy, wear latex gloves.

  • Petroleum jelly is difficult to remove from clothing and carpet and can leave permanent stains. If you're concerned about stains, wear old clothing and cover the floor with newspapers.
