How to Cite an Internet Web Page in a Term Paper

The Internet has streamlined the process of conducting research for a term paper. Gone are the days of leafing through a dusty stack of outdated encyclopedias in hopes of finding some relevant information. However, along with the ease of use comes the responsibility to properly cite your Internet sources. Citing a Web page or an article taken from a Web page is no more difficult than citing a printed source, but it does require a few special considerations.

Instructions

    • 1

Cite a Web page in Modern Language Association (MLA) style by first writing the name of the Web article's author, if there is one, last name first, followed by a period.

    • 2

Include the title of the Web page or name of an article in quotations. Remember to place a period within the quotation marks. Follow this with the name of the website, underlined, and the name of the editor(s), first name first, followed by a period.

    • 3

State the date of electronic publication, then include a period. Cite the name of an associated institute if there is one, then include a period. Include the date you accessed the material and the URL, enclosed in angle brackets.

    • 4

Cite a website in American Psychological Association (APA) style by starting with the name of the author, last name first. Follow with the date a Web page or article was published in parenthesis and the name of the website in italics.

State the date the material was retrieved and follow the date with the URL. For example:

      Retrieved May 12, 2009, from http://madeup.org.resource
