How to Polish Brass Ornaments

Christmas decorations often are be passed down through a family for generations, and antique brass ornaments can become dull and dingy. Caustic chemical polishes might damage these precious family heirlooms, so use safe, everyday household items to restore their shine. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Water
  • Salt
  • White distilled vinegar

Instructions

    • 1

      Dampen a soft cloth with cool water, and rub it over the entire ornament. Examine the brass for stains. If stains are present, the lacquer probably has worn away.

      Mix 1 teaspoon of table salt and 1/2 cup of white distilled vinegar. Stir until the salt is dissolved. Add a teaspoon of flour at a time, and blend until the mixture has the consistency of paste.

      Use a soft cloth to buff an even layer of the paste onto the ornament.

      Allow the brass to sit for 10 minutes with the cleanser on it. Rinse the ornaments with cool water, and dry them with a clean, soft cloth.
