How to Remove the Top of an Amana Washing Machine

When you need access to the tub components in an Amana washing machine, you have to remove the top panel. Removing the top panel requires removal of the control console and the front panel of the Amana. The screws securing the top panel are hidden behind the front of the washer. You will also have to disconnect some wires during the process of removing the top of the Amana washer. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

      Disconnect the Amana's power cord from the wall outlet. Remove the three screws on the top rear edge of the control console with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Pull the top of the control console forward to access the wires connecting to the different components inside the control console.

      Label each of the wire connections in the control console. Wrap a small piece of masking tape around the wires and write their location on the tape with a pencil. Disconnect the wires from the components inside the control console. Set the control console out of the work area.

      Place the blade of a putty knife between the toe panel and the front panel. Press the blade over the retaining clip securing the toe panel and pull the toe panel away from the washer.

      Remove the two screws that secure the bottom of the front panel to the washer cabinet with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Pull out on the bottom of the front panel to release the top retaining clips. Pull the panel away from the washer and set the front panel out of the way.

      Place masking tape over the top lid of the washer to tape the washer lid to the top panel. Remove the screws under the front lip of the top panel with a Phillips-head screwdriver.

      Lift the front of the top panel three inches and pull forward to release the rear retaining clips. Pull the top panel forward enough that you can access the green ground wire on the left rear of the washer.

      Disconnect the screw securing the green ground wire to the top panel with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Locate the white door switch wiring harness connector and pull the connector apart with your fingers to disconnect the harness from the door switch terminals.

      Pull the Amana washer top off the washer and set the panel aside.
