How to Wear a Grand Kilt
The great or grand kilt was worn by Scottish Highlanders and fashioned out of a single, long piece of fabric. The versatile kilt could be used as a hood during stormy and cold weather and also served as a blanket for sleeping on at night. Unlike the short kilt worn by the lowland Scots, the grand kilt started as "the whole nine yards" of fabric. This bolt of fabric was cut in half to create a kilt between 54 and 60 inches wide and around 4 1/2 yards long. The procedure for wrapping on the kilt varied between Scots. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Place your belt on the floor or a bed, with the inside facing up toward you. Drape your kilt material over the belt; position it so that the hem will bisect your knee and the belt cinch at your waist.
-
2
Make small folds in the kilt to form pleats below the belt.
-
-
3
Lie face up on the material. Make sure the kilt's bottom hem meets the back of your knee.
-
4
Grab one side of the kilt and pull it across your body so that it touches the opposite leg.
-
5
Repeat Step 4 with the other side of the kilt.
-
6
Tighten your belt over the folds and stand up. You should have a long piece of fabric hanging down from the small of your back.
-
7
Take the long piece of fabric and pull it over one of your shoulders to "hang the plaid." How you choose to do this is a personal preference. You can make the flap as narrow or wide as you want. Roll it up and tuck this around the small of your back to keep cool, or wrap it around your shoulders during the cold.
