How to Compare Crossbows
Crossbow hunting is becoming more popular across the United States, partly because it's easier than shooting a rifle or using a bow and arrow. Before buying a crossbow, spend some time researching and trying out different models. Crossbows are a big expense, and you don't want to be disappointed after your purchase. Compare crossbows before you make your purchase to get the most for your money.

Hold the crossbow and feel its weight. Lightweight crossbows are ideal if you travel on long hunting excursions requiring you to carry your crossbow for long distances. However, lightweight crossbows can be difficult to hold steady when you take a shot. Heavier crossbows are easier to keep steady, but they can be cumbersome.

Compare crossbow cocking methods. A crossbow you cock by hand is quick and often less expensive, but it can cause inconsistent shot placement. It's easy to pull to the right or to the left when you cock by hand, and you need to cock your crossbow in the same position each time so it's most effective. To cock a crossbow by hand, you should be in good health and be able to deadlift more than 150 pounds. A rope cocking method costs slightly more than cocking a crossbow by hand, but it reduces the effort required by half. That means you should be able to deadlift 75 pounds to use a rope cocking device. This device helps ensure accuracy, but it takes longer to cock your crossbow than it does if you cock by hand. A crossbow crank cocking device mounts on the crossbow and takes only 10 to 15 pounds of effort for you to cock the crossbow, which is ideal for elderly or disabled hunters. A crank cocking devices costs much more than a rope cocking device, and it takes quite a bit of time to cock the crossbow accurately.

Look through the scope as you conduct your crossbow comparison. A red dot scope offers single or multiple dots to help you spot targets up to 30 yards away. Multiple reticle scopes offer magnification features and use crosshairs to help you aim, making them useful for hunting targets beyond 30 yards away.

4
Shoot the models that you like the best. It's possible a crossbow that feels comfortable when you hold it could feel awkward when you shoot it. Shoot several crossbows to find the one that works best for you.

5
Listen to the crossbow after you shoot it. A quiet crossbow helps you hit your target without startling it. Crossbows with parallel limbs are quieter than other types of crossbows. If you like the feel and weight of a crossbow but it's too loud, ask your sales representative about noise-dampening devices you can add to the crossbow to help reduce or eliminate the sound.
