How to Do a Latch Hook Wig

Creating a simple latch-hook wig can save you money. Wigs can be expensive, and are often poorly made and can get tangled. Creating one yourself can be a great solution.

Things You'll Need

• Fishnet pantyhose
• Chalk
• Tape measure
• Thread
• Needle
• Scissors
• Yarn
• Large book
• Latch hook
• Empty gallon milk container
• Yarn needle

Instructions

1. Wear the pantyhose on your head so the waistband is at your hairline. Using chalk, mark the area that you want to use as a wig. Remove the pantyhose; cut the legs completely off. Sew shut the opening that is made by cutting off the legs. Sew on a diagonal to preserve a round shape for the wig.

2. Measure from the crown of your head down to where you want your wig to fall. For instance, if you want a shoulder-length wig, measure from the crown of your head to your shoulder with a tape measure.

3. Choose any type of yarn you like: Your local fabric and yarn store can show you yarn that resembles hair if you want a realistic look; other types of yarn will work for costumes or a fantasy look.

   Wrap your yarn around a flat object--a book works really well. This helps to stretch out the yarn so it will lie flat. Cut the yarn into strips of the length that you want.

4. Use the milk jug as your head model. Turn the milk jug upside down. Put the pantyhose on the bottom of the milk jug. Keep it centered so you can see all the way around it.

5. Hook the yarn onto the pantyhose using a basic rug-hooking method. Then fold the strand in half and wrap the loop around the neck of the latch hook. Go back through the bottom hole with the hook and through the hole of the row.

6. Wrap yarn ends into the opening that will be between the arm and the hook. Pull the hook down into the holes. This will close the hook and pull the yarn down.

7. Hook more yarn. Repeat the process until the wig is covered in yarn; then you can style and decorate as you please.
