How to Crochet a Newsboy Hat

Newsboy caps are similar in style to berets except that they also have a brim on the front. To crochet a newsboy hat, you will have to understand basic crochet stitches and how to crochet in the round. Crochet this newsboy hat using two strands of worsted weight yarn held together. This will make your hat cozy and warm and will also give shape to your stitches. Use a size I hook to make your hat.

Instructions

1. Begin your hat by crocheting in the round. Make two chain stitches, and then make eight half double crochet stitches in the second chain from the hook. Join with a slip stitch to the first half double crochet. For subsequent rounds, you will chain one and then increase by eight half double crochet stitches for every round. So for round 2, you will make two half double crochet stitches in every stitch around, for a total of 16 stitches. For round 3, you will make one half double crochet in the first stitch followed by two half double crochets in the second stitch, and repeat around for a total of 24 stitches. For round 4, make a half double crochet in the first two stitches followed by two half double crochets in the third. Continue increasing until you have approximately 64 stitches.

2. Form the sides of the cap by crocheting evenly around for two more rounds. To do this, chain one and make one half double crochet stitch in every stitch around. Then decrease the rest of your rounds by making a half double crochet two together stitch with the same frequency that you made two half double crochet stitches in one when you increased. So for the round following the even rounds, for example, you will work six half double crochet stitches followed by two half double crochet stitches together, and repeat that pattern around. Continue to decrease until you have 40 stitches (or an appropriate size to fit your head).

3. Work the band of the hat by making four rounds of single crochet stitches, one single crochet per stitch in the round. Fasten off your yarn, and weave in the loose end.

4. Crochet the brim of the cap separately. Start by making a foundation chain of 13 stitches. Single crochet in the second chain from the hook and every chain across, for a total of 12 single crochets. Chain one and turn, and single crochet two stitches in the first and last stitches of this row, for a total of 14 stitches. Repeat this pattern for two more rows until you have 18 stitches, then single crochet across one row evenly. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

5. Use a whip stitch to attach the brim to the front of your newsboy cap. Position the brim directly opposite the seam in the back, and sew the brim to the bottom row of stitches. Now your hat is ready to wear.
