How to Run Multiple Instances of the Yahoo! Messenger

Since Yahoo! Messenger, by default, cannot simultaneously run more than once on a computer, Yahoo! Messenger users with several accounts may find it challenging, if not impossible, to communicate instantly with their contacts in different accounts. Nonetheless, the ability to run several instances of Yahoo! Messenger can be enabled on one's personal computer by modifying the Windows registry. One of the easiest ways to modify the Windows registry is by using the "Run" tool to open the Registry Editor, and then using the Registry Editor to change specific values in the Windows registry.

Instructions

    • 1

Click on the Windows "Start" button, and then select the "Run" tool. If you use Windows XP, select the "Run" tool from the Windows Start Menu. If you use Windows Vista, or Windows 7, click on "All Programs," select "Accessories," and then choose "Run."

    • 2

Type "regedit" in the "Open" field, and then click "OK" or hit "Enter" on your keyboard. Select "Yes" when the "Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer?" message appears. The Registry Editor opens.

    • 3

Go to the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Yahoo\Pager\Test" branch, select "Edit," click on "New," and then choose "DWORD Value." Name the new entry by typing "Plural," and then hitting on the "Enter" key on your keyboard.

    • 4

Right-click on "Plural" in the right pane, select "Modify," and then enter "1" in the "Value data" field under the "Edit DWORD Value" dialog box. Close the Registry Editor. You can now run several instances of Yahoo! Messenger on your computer.
