How to Open a Doc App on a Mac

If you use a Mac, then you know that, like PC users, you have to make some important decisions when it comes to software. Should you use the free, pre-installed Preview software, or upgrade to Adobe Acrobat? Is iMovie enough, or do you need something more powerful, like Final Cut? For typing documents, you have multiple applications from which to choose. Fortunately, it doesn't matter which productivity software you choose, since you can open all apps the same way. Follow these steps to open a application that works with documents.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the Spotlight icon in the upper right hand corner of your computer. The icon looks like a magnifying glass. A small text box will appear.

    • 2

Type "Textedit." The Textedit application comes standard on OSX, the Mac operating system. A list of search results will appear in the upper right hand corner.

    • 3

Click on the icon and name of the Textedit application. The application will open.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you want to use a more robsut application like Open Office, Microsoft Word, or iWork Pages, just type the name of that application into the Spotlight box instead. Note that not all of these applications come standard with OSX, though.

  • You can bypass step 1 by hitting the command key and the space bar at the same time.
