How to Set Up AT&T DSL Router in Bridge Mode

AT&T's primary router is made by 2Wire. The 2Wire router acts as both a DSL modem and wireless router. Bridge mode allows the routing functionality to be disabled so that it is just acting as a plain DSL modem. In bridge mode the 2Wire router is no longer authenticating the connection to the Internet and a router can be placed behind it to control the network. This is most commonly used to set up a business-grade firewall on the network for added security.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect a computer directly to the 2Wire router with an Ethernet cord. Verify that your computer is set to obtain an IP address automatically so that it will get a valid IP from the 2Wire router. Open a web browser and type "gateway.2wire.net/mdc" in the address bar. Enter your password for the modem if it requests one.

In the "Broadband" section click on the "Configure" link. Select "Disable" for the "ATM PVC Search" selection. Also select "Direct IP" for the connection type. Click the "Submit" button to save it. In the "Advanced" section, click on the "Configure Services" link. Uncheck the "Enable Routing" option and click the "Submit" button.

Configure a computer or a router to use a PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet) connection. This device will use the username and password associated with the Internet service to authenticate the connection. The 2Wire router will pass the public IP along directly to this device.

Tips & Warnings

  • The Internet light on the 2Wire router will stay off when it is in bridge mode.

  • AT&T provides very limited technical support for routers in bridge mode.
