Measure the opening in your kitchen where you will place the refrigerator. Allow 1 inch of clearance on each side of the refrigerator. Measure the width of the space, the depth and the height.

Take the height of the hinge cap on the refrigerator into consideration. The hinge cap is the covering that caps the upper part of the door hinge. Manufacturers will list the height of the refrigerator with and without the hinge cap. Since the hinge cap is located near the front of the refrigerator, it will only be a problem if upper cabinets are not recessed. If they are not recessed, they may not open properly if the hinge cap is in the way.

Examine whether you can open the refrigerator if it is placed against a side wall. Make sure you can open the door at a full ninety degrees. The general rule is that if a refrigerator is placed against a side wall, the refrigerator should be at least 3 inches narrower than the opening.

Measure the space you will move the refrigerator through. Check that the doorways to your living quarters aren't too narrow and that there isn't a tight angle in the stairwell. Allow for at least 2 inches of clearance, ideally more.
