How to Configure a Linksys Router to Work With a 2Wire Router

2Wire routers are primarily DSL modems but also have wireless router functionality. 2Wire routers are also primarily designed for home use and have somewhat limited options to help make them user friendly. Linksys routers provide more flexibility with settings like firewall ports and static IP addresses. Larger networks or advanced users may require this flexibility to ensure all the devices work together properly. 2Wire routers have a setup called "bridge mode" that is used to allow another router to run behind them.

You will also need to enter your user name and password that were created with your Internet service provider. This will authenticate the DSL connection and allow the Linksys router to acquire a valid public IP address.

    Tips & Warnings

    • When the 2Wire router is placed in bridge mode the internet light will stay off since it is no longer authenticating the connection.

    • When the 2Wire router is placed in "bridge mode" you will loose your Internet connection until the Linksys router is set up correctly behind it.
