How to Manually Update the Firmware on a Power Mac G4
The firmware on a computer tells the system how to use its interior hardware, such as the processor, RAM and drives. It is, essentially, the drivers for preinstalled content on your computer. All computers have firmware, including the Apple-crafted PowerMac G4. If you have such a computer, every once in a while you need to update the firmware. Instead of having a computer technician perform this, you can download and update the firmware manually.

1
Click the Apple logo in the upper-left corner of the screen. From the pull-down menu, select "Software Updates." The computer now connects to Apple (a browser is not necessary for this) to see if any firmware updates are available for the computer.
-
2
Click "Next" when a window appears that displays the different updates available for your computer. The firmware update appears on the list of updates for your system.
-
-
3
Select "Download and Install." The updated driver now downloads from the Apple.
-
4
Wait for the download and installation to complete. Once it does, the PowerMac G4 shuts down and restarts itself. Once the restart has finished, the firmware is also done updating.
