How to Map Flash Drive

Flash drives are portable memory sticks that store data and information. They come in many different sizes, from as small as 100 MB to as large as 32 GB. One problem with flash drives is that they may not show up in a list of networked drives and cannot be seen through Windows Explorer. You need to map your flash drive in order to properly access and manage its data.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert your flash drive into a USB slot on your computer. Click "Start" on the taskbar and right-click on "My Computer" to select "Manage." This will bring up the Computer Management window.

    • 2

Navigate to "Storage" and double-click on "Disk Management." This will bring up the utility window that lists all current drives on your computer, including the flash drive you inserted earlier.

    • 3

Right-click on the flash drive within the "Disk Management" window. Keep it mind that it may not be associated with a drive letter. One trick to identifying your flash drive is to find the one that lists the appropriate flash drive memory size, such as 256 MB or 1 GB.

    • 4

Select "Change drive letter and paths" from the right-click drop-down menu. Be cautious and select a drive letter that is not being used by an existing drive. Changing its drive letter will map the flash drive to the system.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also rename a newly mapped flash drive by right-clicking on it under the Windows Explorer window, and then selecting the "Rename" function.
