How to Reset a Pearl in a Ring
A pearl ring, especially an heirloom ring that has been handed down to you, may need to be reset at some point. Over time, the original glue holding the pearl in place may show signs of deterioration. If this isn't addressed, the glue may give way, leaving a bare metal post where the pearl once sat. Reset the pearl at the first sign of wear to avoid this situation.

1
Remove the pearl from the ring by placing the ring in a pan of water on the stove. Slowly heat the water.
-
2
When the water feels warm to the touch, remove the ring from the pan and try to pull the pearl free from the post to which it is glued. If it doesn't pull free, place the ring back in the pan and repeat every minute until the pearl pulls free. Stop heating the ring in the water when the water feels too hot to the touch.

If the water technique fails, soften the glue with acetone. Apply a bit of acetone onto a cotton swab and dab it onto the glue. Take care not to get any acetone on the pearl. This can dull the pearl.

Squeeze a dab of jeweler's glue onto the tip of a toothpick and generously apply the glue all over the metal post.
-
5
Line up the hole in the pearl with the metal post and firmly press the pearl down onto it. Make sure that the point at which the pearl and the metal post meet is firmly set.

6
Allow the glue to cure for 24 hours before wearing the ring.

Tips & Warnings
Apply a flexible, clear drying, non-yellowing glue such as Miracle Glue. A solvent-free glue like this won't discolor over time.
If you need to unglue the pearl after using Miracle Glue, use the company's debonder, Miracle Glue Un-do.
If you are concerned about damaging the pearl, consult a trained jeweler.
