How to Decorate Canary Cages

Many canary cages have decorative features that make interesting accessories for home décor. Older birdcages were very ornate, but were usually discarded when a family no longer had a bird. Antique stores are a good place to find a canary cage to use as a decorative piece. An estate sale from an older home is another possibility for finding a birdcage. Turn an old birdcage from trash to treasure, and enjoy the many decorating possibilities. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Match the color of the cage with the room décor. Clean rusty cages with fine-grade sandpaper and apply a primer before painting. Use spray paint for a flawless finish.

    • 2

Place potted ivy inside of the cage. Leave adequate room for watering the plant or use a container with a long spout. Train the ivy stems to weave around the wires of the cage or hang outside of the cage.

    • 3

Place three or more candles inside of the cage. Vary the height and circumference of the candles. Place the cage near a fireplace and light the candles and fireplace for a romantic evening.

    • 4

Display a favorite doll or stuffed animal inside of the cage. Place a ruffled doily on the cage floor for the doll to sit on.

    • 5

Set a miniature house and barn inside of the cage. Place miniature trees, animals and farm equipment in the cage to create a country scene.

    • 6

Hang a rope swing with a wooden bench seat from the top of the cage. Add tiny artificial flowers and a miniature picnic blanket on the floor of the cage.

    • 7

Attach an assortment of colorful helium balloons to the outside of the cage to celebrate a birthday or some other festive occasion. Fill a dish of candy and place it inside of the cage.

    • 8

Attach crystals and beads along the bottom edge of the cage. Attach the beads with thin crafting wire.

    • 9

Set the canary cage on the patio to hold napkins during a party. Place the napkins inside of the cage and decorate the outside with ribbons. For example, red, white and blue ribbons can be used for a Fourth of July celebration.
