Make sure all of your graduation regalia is ready and properly outfitted for the ceremony. The stole is only one part of the graduation outfit. It's important to also consider what you will be wearing under your gown (generally dark clothing is recommended) and especially footwear. Your shoes should look good while being comfortable and allowing you to walk easily on things like steps and carpet.

Put on your graduation cap and gown before putting on your graduation stole. A graduation stole, sometimes referred to as a sash or a hood, is meant for display, and therefore is the outermost layer you will be wearing. Stoles often show off one's accomplishments in school, and include information such as graduation year, major and even fraternity or sorority affiliation.

Put on the stole with the "V"-shaped end facing front and the side with the tassels on your back, so the tassels are hanging down your back. The stole should go over your shoulders and on top of your gown.
