How to Repair the Xbox Red Ring
Since the introduction of the Xbox 360, the video game console has had one glaring issue: the "Red Ring of Death." This error occurs when the machine overheats, causing the motherboard to malfunction. The problem has become so common that Microsoft added three years to its Xbox warranty plan if the problem stemmed from the red ring. While the issue is widespread, you should attempt some troubleshooting techniques before sending the console back to Microsoft.

1
Make sure you are still under warranty. Microsoft allows for a free Xbox repair for up to three years after the end of the original warranty.
-
2
Turn on your Xbox. Note how many red rings appear. If three show up, it is a hardware issue. If there is a complete circle of four red lines, it could be a connection issue with the wires going to the television.

3
Look at the audio/visual cords going into your television. On occasion, a loose wire may cause the red rings to appear. Take them out and plug them back in. Make sure they are plugged in all the way. You will here a slight snapping sound when they have been placed correctly. If the red ring goes away, your Xbox is fine. If it does not, continue to Step 4.

4
Check the power supply. If the light on it is green, the issue has to do with the Xbox 360 hardware, so you should send in a console repair request. If the power supply light is red, orange or unlit, it could be a power source issue. Unplug your Xbox 360, find a new power outlet and plug it back in. If this does not work, there is a power source issue as well.
