How to Put on a Dog Cone

A neck cone is often put on a dog after surgery and is meant to prevent the dog from biting at or licking the affected area while it heals. The cone, which looks like a lamp shade, is usually attached through a collar with strings or tabs on the side of the cone to adjust the tightness of the device. The cone should be short enough to allow the dog to eat and drink normally, but long enough to prevent the dog from reaching its body. Knowing how to put a cone on your dog can improve comfort and prevent problems.

Instructions

    • 1

Weave the dog collar through the slits on the cone.

    • 2

Have the dog sit in front of you and fit the cone around your dog's neck. Latch the collar so that it clicks, then run the plastic tab over the collar.

    • 3

Connect the two edges of the cone. Put the tab through the square hole on the middle or second-loosest setting and run the tab back through.

    • 4

Tighten the tab on the dog cone and tuck it back into the last slit.

Tips & Warnings

  • Your dog may be confused by the cone and may act oddly or have trouble sleeping.

  • Avoid taking the collar off unless recommended by your veterinarian.
