How to Install Outside Home Security Systems

If you want to protect or keep an eye on the activity going on around your home, installing some type of outside home security system will be helpful. The two most popular types of systems are video surveillance and motion detectors. With a video security system, you can view the area and possibly record video in the area when you are not home.   1. Motion Detector

      Remove an existing outside light fixture and replace it with a motion detector light. Turn off the power source and remove your old lightbulb. Wire nuts connect the light fixture to the power source. Carefully remove the nuts to detach the fixture. Use your screwdriver to remove the bracket that holds the old light fixture in place. Your new fixture should come with a new bracket.

      Attach your new light and bracket. Match the wires of your new fixture to the power source wires. Your wires will be color-coordinated. Use the wire nuts to seal the deal. Use your screwdriver to attach the new bracket or frame to hold the new fixture in place.

      Test your motion detector security system. Set your level of sensitivity and duration of the sensor. Turn on the power source and test your system. Your light should come on when someone is in the area.

      Selecting an area for your camera mounting. You can choose to have multiple cameras or just one. The most common areas are in front of doors and windows.

      Mount your camera brackets. Your system will come with brackets for mounting your camera. Attach the mount to your desired location by aligning your brackets, drilling holes and attaching the screws. Make sure your camera will be in a position that is not easily seen and/or reachable. This will eliminate destruction to your system.

      Select an area for your monitor. Connect your monitor to a power source and configure the settings to pick up the camera signal. Your system instructions will guide you through the process.

Tips & Warnings

  • When installing an outside home security system via camera, you can choose to have a wired or wireless connection. Wireless systems are the most common. However, some people prefer the wired systems to avoid signal interferences. Cell phones and wireless internet connections can interrupt your wireless security connection.
