1
Perform a strand test. Follow the instructions provided in your hair-coloring kit to perform a strand test and make sure that you are not allergic to the hair color. Once you pass the test, put on your gloves and old clothes. Mix all of the ingredients together (usually you have to mix two components in a bottle to activate the hair color).

Divide your hair into four sections using clips to hold each section. Use a brush (if the hair color came with one) or your gloved hands to comb the color mixture through the roots of your hair, one section at a time. Be sure to cover the full length of the grey roots, overlapping slightly if necessary.

Set your timer. Once you have saturated your roots, set your timer for the recommended amount of time, per the instructions. For the last five minutes of coloring, saturate your entire head with the color mixture. This will give you an all-over color boost, even out the hair color and ensure that your roots match the rest of your hair.

Rinse your hair in the sink or shower. Be sure to continue rinsing water through your hair until the water runs clear. Apply the conditioner from your coloring kit and comb it through your hair. Rinse the conditioner out after the recommended amount of time.

5
Dry and style your hair as usual. Use a color-safe or color-enriching shampoo to maintain your color in between touch ups.

Tips & Warnings
After applying your hair color, use the washcloth to wipe the color from areas of your skin such as your forehead and ears. This will prevent skin discoloration.
Do not leave hair color on for longer than the recommended amount of time as it may cause excessive damage and hair loss.
