Take several high school courses that relate to this position, if possible. Suggested courses include math, chemistry, biology and physics.
-
2
Apply to colleges. Most individuals in this field complete an two-year junior or community college program which leads into a associate's degree, but four-year programs are available to those who desire them. Currently, there are only a few cardiovascular technology programs that you can enter directly after high school. These programs last approximately one to two years and are offered at a small number of technical institutes and community colleges. These programs include cardiovascular science, cardiovascular technology and cardiac nursing.

Participate in a co-op placement or internship program, if it is available at your college. That way, you'll get to work alongside cardiovascular techs and experience firsthand what they do. Although you'll not be directly working with the client, you will get a feel for the work environment and will be able to list the experience on your résumé.

Get certificated. Although it is voluntary, certifications show you're serious and professional. Plus, most employers request such credentials. You obtain these certificates for cardiovascular technologists through organizations such as the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) and the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS).
