How to Restring a Baseball Mitt

Any baseball player will tell you how important their glove is to them. Once they have bought a glove, broken it in and played a season with it, this inanimate object becomes part of the family. The glove is subject to damage and you may have to make repairs and restring it from time to time.

Instructions

    • 1

Repair the section where the string in your glove has broken or is weakened. You want to fix any area that is broken, but you also want to look for weak spots that could break in the next game or two. Better to make the repair before the glove breaks than wait until a string tears or pops and you make an error because of it.

    • 2

Pull the old string out in order to get started. There are usually four of five strings in a fielder's glove that hold it together. The string that will most likely need repair is the webbing string. Check this one for tension, strength and fraying. The webbing itself may also need to be repaired since most throws are caught in this area.

    • 3

Use a glove-stringing tool to lace the webbing back into place. The stringing tool is like a large sewing needle. Place the end of the leather string in the hole of the tool. Lace the string through all the holes and tie square knots at both ends of the web to secure it and keep it from slipping.

Cut away any old pieces of string around the fingers or the base of the glove that appear to be frayed. Use a razor blade or a box cutter to cut the leather string and then pull those weakened strings out of the glove with needlenose pliers. Replace the line with the stringing tool and tie knots to secure the string.

Put your hand in the glove and check for any loose string or knots that are not sitting right. If the glove feels good to you, test it by going out and having a catch for 10 to15 minutes to see how the glove holds up. Fine tune the glove if you discover any problem area.
