How to Put an Icon on a Flash Drive on a Mac

When you insert a USB flash drive into a Mac computer, the icon that appears on the Desktop and in the Finder window is rather generic. Mac OS X uses the same white, unmarked drive for disc images that do not have an icon specified. Changing the icon of your USB drive makes it easier to locate on the screen. Icons for OS X are available from a number of online sources.

Instructions

Insert your USB flash drive into one of your Mac's USB ports. After the drive appears in the Finder window under "Devices," highlight the drive.

Access the flash drive information settings. Go to the "File" menu and select "Get Info" or press "Command-I."

    • 3

Highlight the icon file you want to use and access the information settings. Choose "Get Info" from the "File" menu or press "Command-I."

    • 4

Go to the "Get Info" window for the icon file you want to use, click on the icon image in the "Preview" area. Drag the image over to the "Get Info" window for the flash drive and drop it on the existing icon.

Go to the "Get Info" window for the icon file. Click on the small icon image at the top of the window. Copy it by selecting "Copy" from the "Edit" menu or by clicking "Command-C."

Click on the small icon in the "Get Info" window for the USB drive. Paste the new icon into that space by selecting "Paste" from the "Edit" menu or by clicking "Command-V."

    • 7

Remove the icon file that will appear in the actual USB drive by highlighting the drive in the devices menu and moving the file to the Trash. The new icon will appear in the "Get Info" window as well as in the Finder and on the Desktop.
