How to Transfer a Video From the Internet to a Flash Drive

Flash drives are common storage devices these days, and they range in size from one to several gigabytes. Flash drives provide mobile storage for documents, music and video files; and they make great backup storage devices. Files downloaded from the Internet, such as videos, can easily be transferred to a flash drive, but the process may vary depending on the website the video is transferred from.

Insert the flash drive into the computer's USB port. Check to make sure the computer recognizes the device in the "My Computer" menu.

    • 2

Navigate to the Internet video you wish to transfer. The video may be in downloadable form already, or it might be on a website, such as YouTube, that requires additional steps to capture the file.

    • 3

Select the option to download the video if in downloadable format. Choose the drive that points to the flash drive (e.g. E:\). Confirm the location folder and file name before choosing the "Save" button.

Videos not in a downloadable format may require the use of screen capture software. YouTube videos can be downloaded using the SaveTube website (see link in Resources). Insert the Web address for the video you wish to download into the "Video To Save" box then click the "Go" button. Choose the video file type for the download and make sure to direct it to the flash drive before clicking the "Save" button.

Tips & Warnings

  • The videos can be downloaded to the computer's hard drive first before being transferred to the flash drive. Once the file is downloaded, right-click on the file then select the "Copy" option. Choose a location within the flash drive before clicking "Copy."

  • If the video file is on the computer's hard drive, it can also be dragged into the flash drive's folder. Open the flash drive in an Explorer window. Click on the video file and hold down the mouse button until you release the file within the flash drive.
