How to Repair Black Onyx

Utensils, heat, water damage and overuse can all cause wear and tear on onyx. Slide a damp towel over the damaged black onyx, and then put a dab of countertop polish or rubbing compound on it This compound should be slightly granular to the touch, so that it acts as a liquid sander.

Use the buffing pad to buff the onyx with the compound. Don't apply too much pressure; the compound will do the work for you. Buff the onyx for about 30 seconds, then wipe the compound away and check the damaged area for progress. If the damage is gone, progress to Step 3. If it's not, repeat the process as necessary. Keep in mind that chips will not buff out.

Rinse the area using clean tap water and dry it off. Use a sponge or towel to spread paste wax over the buffed area to reseal it. Allow 12 hours of setting time.

This process can be used on any granite countertops as well.
Over buffing can wear spots in countertops. Always buff for a short period of time and then check your progress.
