How to Contact People in Chat Rooms
Chat rooms help strangers connect to form friendships and relationships in the safety of their own homes. Though you may think anything goes in a chat room, there is an etiquette that should keep you from asking personal information of other chat room users. When you find an interesting person in a chat room, you should practice restraint in instantly asking for his or her contact information. However, you may find that in time you can contact this person outside of the chat room.

1
Enter a chat room and take part in the discussion in the public area. Do not attempt to private message a person until you have sparked a respectful conversation in the public area of the chat room. Private messaging a person may make her uncomfortable, so ask her if it is okay for you to do so before you send a private message.

2
Ask the person for his contact information once you have gotten to know that he is trustworthy through chatting in a chat room. You should start out by asking for less private contact information like his email address, MySpace or Facebook profile, or instant messaging screen name. You definitely do not want to ask for a physical address or phone number if you have only known each other for a few days.

Email or message the person for a while, practicing polite and respectful etiquette. This includes refraining from asking personal questions about her family life or past. You also do not want to divulge too much information of your own all at once either; slowly reveal what you feel you are comfortable with someone else knowing.

Ask the person if it would be all right if you had his phone number to text him during the day. You should only request such a thing once you have spoken with the person for quite a while, or when both of you have discussed an interest in exchanging phone numbers. If the person turns you down or ignores your request, don't let this upset you. He may feel a little shy about talking on the phone, or may not be ready to have a more serious relationship that comes with talking on the phone. Since the person now knows you want to talk on the phone, he will ask you for your phone number once he feels ready.
