How to Set Up an External Dialup Modem

Two types of modems exist for connecting to the Internet. The typical modem is known as an internal modem that sits inside the computer. The other kind is the external modem. The external modem is connected to a computer via a cable, rather than directly to the motherboard. This allows for a quick Internet setup as well as no need to open up your PC.

  • Serial or USB cable
  • Telephone cable
  • Account with Internet service provider

      Insert the installation CD that came with the external modem. Follow the directions that appear to install the drivers for your modem.

      Connect the modem to the PC with the cable used. Note that if you have a choice between using the serial port and the USB port on your PC, use the USB port.

      Connect the external modem to the phone jack using the telephone wire.

    • 4

      Plug in the modem (if necessary) and turn it on. Your modem is immediately recognized by the PC.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember to disable call waiting before connecting to the Internet.
