How to Care for Dahlias in the Winter

Dahlias come in a variety of colors and sizes, all of which create a beautiful garden or landscape. Dahlias are easy to care for, and require little maintenance during warm seasons, but they are fragile during winter conditions. As the plants will die when subjected to freezing temperatures, it is important to dig out the tubes (or bulbs) of the dahlias, and store them indoors during cold winter months. Instructions

    • 1

Cut the stems down to 6 inches, after the first winter frost.

    • 2

Dig out the tubers (bulbs) of the plants with a small shovel, digging roughly 6 inches around the tubers, so you do not pierce them with the shovel. Gently tap off any loose soil.

    • 3

Place the tubers in a box with a lid, where they can sit freely without touching one another. Allow them to dry out for 1 day.

    • 4

Place the lid on the box, and store in a cool, dry place. A basement, garage or storage area of the home will work perfectly.

    • 5

Check the tubers every month during storage, adding a light mist of water to tubers that appear to be shriveling. Use only a small mist of water, as too much will cause mildew to develop on the tubers.
