Shut down your computer and remove the power cord from the back of the unit. Put a grounding strap on your wrist to dissipate any built up static electricity. Grounding straps are available at many computer stores, as well as many online retailers. If you do not have access to a grounding strap, at least ground yourself by touching a piece of metal before opening your computer's case.

Remove the retaining screw from the back of your computer's case using a small screwdriver. Locate the case removal lever and pull up on it to remove the computer cover. If your computer is designed to sit flat on the desk, the case removal lever should be located on the top of the unit. If the computer is a tower design, the lever should be on the side of the case.

Pull the cover off of the case and set it aside. Locate the existing hard drive and remove the cables from the back of the unit. Remove the screws that hold the hard drive in place.

Slide the old hard drive out of the drive bay and slide the new drive into the bay. Secure the new hard drive with the screws, then connect the cables to the back of the drive. Replace the cover on the case, then replace the retaining screws on the back of the case.
