How to Create an Airplane Rivet in Photoshop CS4

Make a realistic-looking airplane rivet in Photoshop CS4 by using the program's built-in filters and layer effects. Create a single rivet and then use it to make a Photoshop brush, which will let you draw rivets anywhere that you want to use them in your Photoshop artwork. Your finished rivet will have a three-dimensional brushed metal appearance and be complete with lighting highlights. Once you have created the rivet brush, you will be able to customize the brush by changing it size and spacing attributes.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a new file about 8 inches square. Create a new layer. Select the elliptical marquee tool. Hold the "Shift" key, click the left mouse button, and draw a large circle. The exact size isn't important, but work large enough that you can see what you're doing.

    • 2

Set the foreground color to medium gray (60% black) and the background color to dark gray (80% black). Fill the circle with the foreground color. Add noise by going to Filter, then Noise, Add Noise. Set the noise at 30% Gaussian, and select "Monochromatic." Click "OK" and save your file.

    • 3

Go to "Filter" and choose "Blur" and "Motion Blur." Make the blur angle setting 45 degrees and the distance 35 pixels. Click "OK." Go to "Select" and "Inverse" to select the area around the rivet. Delete this by pressing the "Delete" or "Backspace" key. Be sure you are working on Layer 1 and not the background layer.

    • 4

Bring up the Layer Style menu by double-clicking on Layer 1 in the Layers palette. Select "Inner Glow" and click the check box next to the name. Click on the name to bring up the options for that style. Make these setting changes: Blend, "Darken"; Color, "Black"; Technique, "Softer"; Source, "Center"; Choke, "60"; Size "200"; Contour, "Cove-shallow"; Range, "39." Next, click on the Drop Shadow check box in the Layer Style menu. Use the default settings.

    • 5

Keep the Layer Style menu open. Click on the Bevel and Emboss check box. Click on the name, and then select these settings: Style, "Inner Bevel"; Technique, "Smooth"; Depth, "100%"; Direction, "Up"; Size, "27." Leave the other settings at their defaults. Click "OK" on the Layer Style menu. Save your file.

    • 6

Go to "Filter," "Render" "Lighting Effects." Select the Crossing Style and set the Spotlight to "Negative 68"; Focus, "69"; Gloss, "50 (Shiny)"; Material, "100 (Metallic)"; Exposure, "0"; Ambience, "11"; and Texture, "None." Drag the lighting control handles until the light comes from the upper left corner.

    • 7

Make sure you are on Layer 1 and then select the rivet. Go to the Edit menu, and select "Define Brush Preset." Give the brush a name and click "OK." Your brush will now be available in your brush library.
