How to Create a Link Bar With Microsoft Front Page

Microsoft FrontPage lets people with little to no Web design experience create, publish and administer websites. It makes it easy for novice designers to insert text and hyperlinks, add images, and modify document fonts and colors. Unfortunately, FrontPage provides no obvious way to create link bars, commonly used navigation elements that run along the side or across the top of a Web page. This functionality is most simply added through the use of tables.

Instructions

    • 1

Add a basic table. With your Web page open in FrontPage, find the location on your page where the link bar will sit. Click once in this area to place your cursor at this spot. Select "Table" from the menu near the top of your screen and place your mouse over the "Insert" option. Click "Table" in the submenu. Create a horizontal link bar by creating a table with one row and five columns (change this number if your bar has more or fewer items). Reverse these numbers for vertical link bars. Click "OK" to place the table on your page.

    • 2

Enter your menu text. Click in the left-most cell of the table. Type the text for your first menu item. Click the "Tab" key to move to the next cell. Repeat until all the link bar items appear on your page.

Add hyperlinks. Highlight all the text you entered in the left-most cell of the table. Click the hyperlink icon in the toolbar near the top of your screen (it looks like a blue ball with a white chain link below it). Type the URL of the page you want to link to, or click the "File" icon (resembling a magnifying glass) to link to a file on your computer. Click "OK" to place the link. Repeat until all the items in your link bar contain hyperlinks.

Update table properties. Right click anywhere on your link bar and select "Table Properties." Change the width, height, padding, spacing, border and background properties of your link bar table to suit your design needs. Click "OK" when finished, to save your changes.

Update table cell properties. Right click anywhere on an individual cell in your table. Select "Cell Properties." You can change the properties of all the cells at the same time by highlighting each cell and selecting "Cell Properties." Modify the alignment, width, height, border and background properties of your link bar table cells as desired. Click "OK" to save your changes.

Update text properties. Left click at the beginning of the line of text in your left-most table cell, then drag your mouse to the end of the line of text in your right-most table cell. Click "Format" on the menu near the top of your screen. Select "Font." Choose the font, style, size, color and effects for your link bar text. Click "OK" to confirm your choices.

Save and preview your page. Click "File" on the menu near the top of your screen. Select "Save." Open the page you just edited in your Web browser to see your new link bar in action.
