How to Set Dye in Clothes
One of the most inexpensive ways to stay on top of today's fashions is to make your own clothing. Doing so starts with the basic preparation of the cloth, including using dyes to color the fabric according to your tastes. However, dyeing a fabric without properly fixing or setting that dye in the cloth can result in stained skin and furniture. Taking the proper time to set the dye on the front end will prevent a headache later on, in the event that the dye leeches onto an inconvenient place. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Ascertain the type of dye that you will be using. If homemade, you'll want to know whether the dye is berry-based or plant-based. If store bought, read the label to make a determination, and always compare your findings with the manufacturer's instructions to account for any variables that may exist between the store bought dye and one that is homemade.

2
Prepare your color fixative prior to dyeing the fabric. The fixing agents allow the fabric to hold dye better, so they will be ineffectively if you add the dye before preparing the fabric to take it.

Mix ½ cup salt in 8 cups of cool water if the dye you are using is berry-based. If the dye is plant-based, you'll use four parts cool water to one part vinegar, and make enough to entirely submerse the fabric. In either case, allow the fabric to remain submerged in the fixative for at least an hour; rinse it thoroughly.

Proceed with the dyeing process according to your personal taste.
